Blue moon of Kentucky keep on shining*

Janice Holt Giles is one of my very favorite authors. I collected her books for years and have them all. Hannah Fowler, 40 Acres and No Mule along with the Enduring Hills are just a few of my favorites about Kentucky.  Once you start reading her books you won’t be able to put them down. Great, interesting post. marker new

Over the weekend I went to a couple of good estate sales where I picked up several good books.

I was happy to see the book by Janice Holt Giles. Chances are you have never heard of her, but she was a popular mid-range author in the 1950s-70s. She never got rich from her writing, but she was able to support herself, and that is saying something.

Janice Holt was born in Arkansas in 1905. As a child she moved to Indian Territory (Oklahoma) where her parents were both teachers. She grew up with books and music and went to college. When her first marriage ended, she and her daughter moved to Louisville, Kentucky where Janice worked for Dr. Lewis Sherrill, Dean of the Presbyterian Seminary.

Paint Lick, which is probably one of the most odd names for a community I have come across, is located in Garrard County on the fringes of the bluegrass region of Kentucky.   It lies along State Routes 21 and 52 east of the Lancaster, the county seat of Garrard County, and to the west of Berea.

Paint Lick was considered one of the most modern schools the area in 1912 when the original four rooms were built to accommodate grades k-12 in the small town of Paint Lick, Kentucky.   The brick building soon became too small to accommodate students so over the years a few additions were added including a gymnasium that was built in two sections.  The school served the community of Paintlick until 1994 when a new school was built in town.

On our finale to our cross country drive and cycling vacation, we had one last stop to make in Kentucky.  See, our son-in-law Mitchell was on a job assignment up there, and we just had to stop in and check it out.  You know, it’s a tough job, but he was up in Kentucky and working on an expansion for Jim Beam … yep, that one … of the Kentucky Bourbon fame!
DSC_5784-2

As soon as we entered the Jim Beam property, we saw the iconic Jim Beam building and these greenish buildings, which are called rickhouses.  They store the barrels of bourbon-to-be during their aging process.  I’m telling you, I was quite impressed with the number of these buildings … man, there’s a lot of bourbon going on!  In fact, bourbon is going through quite an explosion in its popularity.  In 1964, bourbon was declared as “America’s Native Spirit” through…
