KENTUCKY VIETNAM VETERANS MEMORIAL HONORING HER FALLEN HEROES IN VIETNAM

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Frankfort, Kentucky is dedicated to the Kentuckians who died in the Vietnam war.  Vietnam War Memorial - CopyMy visit to this memorial was on a sunny Kentucky afternoon when you just want to get outside and do something.  The memorial is located in  a quiet, somber park-like setting with lots of room for parking and a beautiful view of the Kentucky capitol across the road.  There are deer all around and they don’t seem to mind visitors to the spot.  Capitol from Memorial - CopyThe sundial located in the middle of the memorial is elegant and amazing.  The  granite plaza of the Memorial contains the names of Kentucky’s 1103 citizens who died. Each name is located so the shadow of the sundial pointer touches each veteran’s name on the anniversary of his death. Thus, each individual is honored with a personal tribute. This is a very unique-one-of-a-kind memorial. If you enjoy history, you will love visiting this spot.  The tranquility, the incredible planning and unique design makes it such an interesting  place to visit.Veitnam Veterans Memorial2

Kentucky's Vietnam War Memorial

I have been to the memorial several times and it is never crowded unless there is a special event.  It will become one of your favorite places you have visited.  It is off the main highway and the views are lovely.  You will be totally fascinated with the architecture of this place and the serenity.  The fellow below even consented to pose for us on the way out!Deer - Copy - Copy

A Visit to Mammoth Cave

Finally we reached the first large cavern.Mammoth Cave National Park provides a great place to learn about caves, forests, groundwater, wildlife, and history.
In addition to many cave tours, Mammoth Cave National Park offers hiking, horseback riding, camping and bicycling. There is more than 70 miles of forest trails.
Mammoth Cave is considered the world’s longest cave.

We had a thrilling morning spent 260 feet below ground exploring the underground caverns of Mammoth Cave.

IMG_1580Our family loves caves. When we have an opportunity to explore a new one we always try to stop. This was a new cave for our family. When we realized we would be vacationing in Kentucky we knew we had to check out Mammoth Cave, the longest cave in the world.

The cave consists of 405 explored miles of underground caverns with a possible additional 600 miles that have yet to be explored.

The tours offered to the public take you through 12 miles of that 405 miles, with a variety of different tour options to pick from.

We chose a tour that was ranked moderate in difficulty. This was the first time Ozzie and Tyler had been in a cave and were a bit nervous. They ended up loving it with…

VISITING RENFRO VALLEY IN MT. VERNON, KENTUCKY

Renfro Valley in Mt. Vernon, Kentucky is a great place to visit with wonderful shows and entertainment for the entire family. Renfro Valley Mill at Mt. Vernon, Kentucky - Copy

Recently, my daughter and I spent a beautiful Kentucky afternoon and evening in Rockcastle County and decided to visit the Renfro Valley Entertainment Center.   Renfro Valley is not open on Wednesday during the week but we were allowed to take some pictures of the  grounds and enjoyed having the place to ourselves.  The sun was shining and we could not have asked for a better day to visit except we did go back the next day when it was open to the public.  Renfro Valley4

I have been visiting Renfro Valley for many years and have enjoyed so many wonderful shows as they say “in the valley”.   My first time was when I was about two years old with my mother and father.  I remember as a child my father always had to listen to John Lair and Renfro Valley on the radio back in the 50s.  Tanya Tucker, Randy Travis and the Oak Ridge Boys are just a few of the shows my family has enjoyed over the years. They have some great entertainers scheduled this fall, too. You can check out their list of performances here:  2015 Headliner Concerts.

The statue below of “Old Joe Clark” meets you at the door of the barn where he performed banjo and comedy in Renfro Valley for half a century.Old Joe Clark, Renfro ValleyThe grounds are groomed, immaculate and so inviting to the public.Renfro Valley3There is a campground, a restaurant, the church, and so many adorable shops.  You can also get a great ice cream cone on a hot day in Kentucky. Renfro Valley 2We had a good visit with Nelson and Ruth Hamilton who own the Renfro Valley Country Market pictured in the photo below.  They have a little bit of everything in their shop  and carry our cookbooks from our sister site, The Southern Lady Cooks. Renfro Valley Country MarketWe have enjoyed the Apple Cinnamon Jelly we bought at the Country Market several mornings with homemade biscuits.

We would recommend this great  55 acre destination complex located in south central KY and conveniently a stone’s throw away from Interstate 75 at exit 62 and started back in 1939 by John Lair to anyone.  Thank you Renfro Valley for entertaining us for all these years and being a great place to visit.  You make our state of Kentucky proud!

CEDAR CREEK LAKE IN LINCOLN COUNTY

Cedar Creek Lake is a 762  acre fishing lake located between Stanford and Crab Orchard in Lincoln County.  IMG_5020This is the second largest state controlled lake in Kentucky and is stocked with bluegill, black crappie, channel catfish, large mouth bass and sunfish.  All trees and shrubs were left in the lake to provide a fisherman’s paradise.

A buffer zone surrounds the perimeter of the lake and there are 3 boat ramps that provide access to the lake.  There is no lodging at the lake and the nearest major city is Danville.

Cedar Creek Lake Outfitters, in Central Kentucky, one mile East of the dam on Hwy 150, is a full service bait and tackle shop, including live bait for your fishing needs. You can check them out here:  Cedar Creek Outfitters

Another great place to visit in our state of Kentucky and if you love fishing, you will probably love this lake.
