Welcome To Kentucky

Louisville is a five-hour drive from Chicago but a world away, full of Bourbon, Kentucky Fried Chicken, horses and changing neighborhoods. Here are must-do activities to experience some of the best food, drink, shopping and sites of Louisville in a short amount of time.

Day 1 – Morning: From the Marriott Louisville Downtown head to Market Street to get to NuLu, also known as East Market District. This neighborhood is rapidly changing, a.k.a getting hipsterfied, and is a mix of industrial companies, restaurants, shops and galleries.  My prediction: in five years it will be over-saturated with shops and chains, however, now it has a great vibe with interesting art and people.

So that means that for the month of September, I will be celebrating by bringing you some bourbon hits and the history that comes with them.

This week we are going to start out with the first known bourbon cocktail, and possibly the first “cocktail” ever, the Old Fashioned. It is thought that the first use of the name “Old Fashioned” was used at the Pendennis Club in Louisville, Kentucky. At the time, the Pendennis Club was a very popular gentleman’s

club, and since it was in Louisville, I’m sure the bourbon (and good bourbon at that) flowed freely. The club was established in 1881 and it is thought that the drink was made by the bartender to honor…

Buffalo Trace Distillery… Frankfort, Kentucky

I had the opportunity to take a tour at Buffalo Trace last week. Buffalo Trace Distillery is over 200 years old and is located in Frankfort, Ky. This Distillery is GORGEOUS. With over 500 accolades to the Buffalo Trace brand and the fact that this Distillery is over 200 years old, I promise this is a must see in Kentucky. The grounds are beautiful and as manicured as a Kentucky horse farm. I was lucky enough to get to take the Trace Tour. I highly recommend you take the time to go along on this tour, you get to see their Signature bourbons being bottled by HAND and walk thru the warehouse to see the barrels. I learned so much about the process, it was truly fascinating. Of course at the end of the tour, there is a tasting of their award winning bourbon. So, if the luscious grounds, the history, the stories and the amazing smell doesn’t pull you in, then you can always just go for the Bourbon!
